ahan-dahang nahulog mula sa langit ang kauna-unahang patak ng tag-ulan. Dumampi iyon sa pisngi ni Tandang Aga na noo'y nagkataong naghahanda ng bukid na kanyang pagasasakahan. Tuwang tuwa siya sapagkat tamang tama lamang ang pagdating ng ulan upang masmapadali ang pagbubungakal niya ng lupa.

Sa kanyang kagalakan, ninais pa niyang lasapin ang kauna-unahang patak na iyon. Bagamat sa ito'y maalat, dahil ayon sa kanya ay epekto ng polusyon sa tubig at hangin, bakas pa rin sa kanyang mukha ang saya. Ibinuka niya ang kanyang bibig upang malasap pa ang susunod na patak ng para sa kanya ay tila matamis at masarap na sorbetes.

Tumingala siya sa langit nang buong galak at kanyang naaninag ang pinakaaasam na sorbetes na kulay dilas (cheese flavoured). Ngunit bago pa man niya ito matikman, napansin niyang mataas at tirik na tirik ang araw, maaliwalas ang kalangitan at walang bakas ng kahit kaunting ulap na may dalang ulan. Kung kaya't dali-daling iniwasan niya ang sorbetes na nahuhulog mula sa langit. Bukod dito ay kanya ring nakita ang isang uwak na humahalakhak na lumilipad.

Tandang Aga:
" letcheng ibon 'to! Buti na lang at naiwasan ko 'yung 'yung ice cream!
Walang-hiyang ibon 'yun, kaya pala maalat."

(O Tandang Aga, akala ko ba, e polusyon lang 'yun, hahaha!)

Bigla na lamang nagising si Tandang Aga, ngunit parang ewan lang at nakapikit pa rin. Muli niyang naramdaman ang patak ng tubig sa kanyang pisngi. Sa takot na ito'y wiwi na naman ng isang ibong tuwang tuwa, hindi na niya ito sinubukan pang lasaping muli. Ngunit sa pagkakataong ito, malamig ang kapaligiran at hindi na ito panaginip. Totoo na ngang umuulan.

Ngunit bakit nga ba siya nababasa? 'Di kaya may sira ang bubong ng kanilang bahay? Bumalikwas siya agad-agad at sinuri ang kisame ng bahay ngunit wala siyang nakitang tulo mula dito. Dapat lang siguro, mahal ang ibinayad n'ya sa gumawa ng bubungan ng kanilang tahanan. Maliban na lamang kung naloko s'ya ng kanyang kumpare na kanyang pinagkatiwalaan. Pero sa'n nga ba nagmumula ang tulo?

Sa sandaling iyon, nakita niya ang kanyang kapatid na si Ching na kikilig habang natutulog.

(Ah! kaya naman pala mainit! Wiwi pa rin naman pala eh, pero ng ibang ibon nga lang!)

UPLB reacts to ABS-CBN's MMK episode

UPLB has issued an official statement to ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation in light of a recent episode of their Maalala Mo Kaya program which inadvertently cast a bad light on the University and its constituents.

The complete letter is as follows:

Our attention has been called by constituents and alumni to an episode featured in Maala-ala Mo Kaya entitled "Blusa," which was aired on ABS-CBN on Feb. 28 and on TFC recently. Our constituents and alumni were concerned whether the episode was based on truth.

The story was of a woman who allegedly graduated BS AgriBusiness, summa cum laude, from the University of the Philippines Los Baños or UPLB, who could not find a job, and ended up a stripper. We tried to find out who the subject was by tracking all 27 of our summa cum laude graduates from the time the University was established in 1909. We could not find anyone matching the subject as portrayed in "Blusa."

Whether or not the subject was a UPLB graduate, we deeply sympathize with her and her family. However, in the interest of maintaining its reputation as a truthful storyteller, the MMK should have a mechanism to validate claims by letter senders especially those that require a stretch of imagination as to be believed.

While indeed touching and a perfect example of a human-interest story, "Blusa" regrettably affected the reputation of UPLB as an educational institution and its constituents and alumni. We therefore request ABS-CBN to set the record straight and correct the wrong impression that it created among its viewers. We also make an appeal to producers of similar programs to be more prudent in reporting stories with claims that would affect the reputation not only of a school but also of its alumni in the Philippines and abroad.
